Preppy Can I: The Best Prepster Coffee Table Reading

It’s no question that ‘preppy’ is a way of life – but what does that descriptor ACTUALLY mean? For many people, it’s a derivative of what we learned from our more conservative parents, blended with a modern day aesthetic. Preppy can describe your personal style, your wardrobe, your home, or even your attitude.

Preppy or prep (all abbreviations of the word preparatory) refer to a subculture in the United States associated with the old private Northeastern university-preparatory schools. The terms are used to denote a person seen as characteristic of a student or alumnus of these schools.

Traditionally, this includes conservative clothing and decor, shopping from well established and historical brands (like Brooks Brothers or Ethan Allen), and clothing designed to reflect the leisure lifestyle activities of the upper crust: equestrian, sailing, squash, lacrosse, hunting, fencing, crew, golf, rugby etc. Theres an iconic cult following for Preppy brands and designers like Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, Tommy Hilfiger, and hundreds more – and similar design aesthetics have spilled over into home design as well. In our household, I like to think of our style as a blend of Northeastern preppy (him) and California breezy (my side) – and together, we’ve created a home that feels warm and lived in, but distinctly traditional and preppy in parts. I’m from LA, so anything to stuffy feels suffocating to me – but I can’t help but fall for crisp colors, plaids and tartans, and colorful pieces in traditional styles. In our living room, I’m curating a stack of coffee table books that are a nod to our shared aesthetic – here are my top 5 favorites:

1. Preppy: Cultivating Ivy Style, by Jeffrey Banks & Doria de la Chapelle (bonus: foreword by Lilly Pulitzer!)

Preppy Can I: Sailing Attire

California natives are frankly REALLY lucky to live along some major coastline – and in the bay area, we’re really close to a lot of the best things the west coast has to offer.

I’m super into water, and always have been – going to the beach, driving to the lake, swimming in pools. You name it, and I’m into it (except for whale watching – wasn’t super into that, and definitely get a little sea sick). We’re super excited to go sailing with our friends this weekend, and can’t wait to get out on the water! According to east coast preps and California boating kids everywhere, here’s an updated take on sailing attire:

Detailed & Delighted // Preppy Can I: Sailing Attire

1. A striped sailor top in wind resistant fabric (some of my favorites are made by Joules and Vineyard Vines)

2. Boat shoes – these Sperry’s are perfect, and light soles won’t leave marks on the hull

3. Patagonia Puffer – break up the wind chill with a lightweight topper in a preppy bright color

4. White Jeans (because, obviously, it’s still summer…)

5. Matching Scarf – equally cute and functional, this will decrease the wind chap on your face + neck

Ahoy!

Preppy Can I: A Week of Nantucket Outfit Inspiration

Summer is here, and weeklong trips to our favorite summery destinations are in order! There is nowhere that embodies the preppy leisure lifestyle like Nantucket, and we have a whole set of outfit inspirations from around the web to inspire your East Coast trip. Abundant is the Lilly, the Jacks, and the Vineyard Vines – and with enough looks to get you through a full week, the only thing left for you to do is hop on a plane, and hunt down the best ‘Lob-stah Roll’ and Ice Cream cone on the island (hint: our votes are the Juice Bar (here) and Something Natural (here), respectively). Happy summering, preps!

Today’s inspiration – and a few other things

I’ve been spending a lot of my open-eye minutes recently thinking about what inspires me. Not that I really have time to set aside for this activity – it’s more like it pervades my subconscious while I’m doing other things, like dialing in for a sales call or talking to a girlfriend over a glass of wine at a very well decorated bar (happy hour, duh). I’ve noticed I can’t go more than 5 minutes without thinking about something creative, even when I’m engaged in another activity – and that has me considering my life plans.

It might sound a little silly in the abstract, but in general, I’ve been working on mindfulness, and distilling some of the 5,000,000,000+ thoughts that I have each day into tangible ideas and action-starters. I have also recently realized and acknowledged that there is only so much data capacity in my brain – how much actual hard drive is still available remains to be seen, but certainly my processing speed is impacted when I have a lot going on (so there, that’s proof! Sort of). I still believe that I can do everything I want to, semi-simultaneously, and fairly fabulously – it’s just going to take some mindful consideration and planning.

So all this is to say that about 3 times an hour at work, and on my phone every 10 minutes the rest of the time, I’m finding inspiration online, on Pinterest, reading articles, and dreaming big dreams. It’s a lot like daydreaming, and it’s great for my professional productivity. Here are 5 things creatively inspiring me today – where are you finding inspiration?

1. This perfectly ladylike living lounge, accented by a gilded mirrors and marble side table, a natural jute rug, and the most perfect custom upholstered floral lounge chair. Society Social, you are the stuff dreams are made of. I can just picture having a ginormous home office one day and a lounge area to make as girly as possible…

2. This retro photo of Françoise Hardy in a rattan peacock chair. This is what I’m saying: I want a peacock chair more than ANYTHING. Very Mrs. Lilien, no?? And also: how gorgeous is her sunkissed preppy look, in very little makeup?

3. Neon signs like this one at Mr. Holmes Bakehouse in the city (SF) (in pink, obviously). I’ve been dreaming of a ‘Detailed & Delighted’ neon sign for a while now – it might be time to pick one up…

4. Saving up for a dreamy summer home, like this one in Nantucket. I have a lot of things to save for first (and I mean a LOT), but one day, I think it would be really special to give our future kids a place to call home outside of the hustle of life during the summers. Being near the sea is a must; sand is an added bonus; add in East Coast charm, and its a no brainer. Nantucket it will be.

5. The most perfect girly chic wallpaper and matching monogram to go with it – le sigh, when will we live somewhere long enough to put up wallpaper? Alexis Bednyak (conritbutor at Rue Magazine, stylist, and designer extraordinaire) really kills me with her perfect modern prep designs. LOVE.

My Style: Birthday at a Winery

Apologies for the brief hiatus, friends + followers – I’ve been getting over being sick, so there was more cuddling with Chloe/resting than blogging on the to-do list this past week. Never fear – I’m back!

Today we’re talking about winery style – what do you wear to a vineyard in the middle of January? I’ll caveat this point by saying that I am blissfully aware that a California winter is nothing to complain about – but still, 50 degrees and foggy calls for some careful dressing. I woke up the morning of my birthday, and realized that I needed an outfit to carry me from car ride to Sonoma, through the private tasting, and into an afternoon of football at the local tavern.

Enter: the over the knee riding boot. I am a HUGE fan of anything luxe leather – add some fun hardware and an over the knee style, and your footwear goes from meek to chic. I spent the better part of the fall coveting a pair of suede Tory Burch boots, only to try them on at Saks and HATE them. The next week, I found my perfect pair on sale at Nordstrom, and I have been a happy wearer of these Coach boots for the last month of two. My advice for finding your perfect pair? Look for a low/flat heel, and well constructed calf. Depending on your preference, hardware can definitely amp up the look – I opt for gold regularly, because it matches my skin tone and a majority of my jewelry.

Once I had decided on my boots, I paired them with a crepe-thin white sweater (similar here from J. Crew), a twirly skirt in a jewel tone (on sale here from LOFT!), and a glittery statement necklace that my dad bought me for Christmas (see similar here). To keep warm, I donned my favorite white pea coat (I’ve had it since college, this one is similar), and we were off! My favorite fallback purse kept all my needed goods (phone + lip gloss + winery cards + small gifts) together – and I felt put together and polished all day – even when R and I were sampling fried apps and the beer selection at Hopmonk with the group 6 hours later!

The day was perfect, and I loved my accessories – but the best part? A day of celebrating with my favorite friends, including some of my best girls, L and E. Happy Birthday, indeed!

Preppy Can I: Headband Happy

Happy Tuesday! Around the second day of the week, I start considering my closet. Monday’s wardrobe choice is largely shooting from the hip – I pull out something I love, throw it on, and go! Tuesday through Friday tend to be a bit more planned out and styled, and I like it that way. Tuesday is BY FAR my busiest day in the office, typically the most popular days for interviews (so looking polished is a good idea when you’re candidate-facing), and we also typically hold wedding meetings on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons. Even on my best outfit days (we’re talking jeans look great, sweater + shirt combo is really working, and I’m loving my shoe choice), I find that an accessory or two can really help pull the whole look together and make a statement simultaneously. Enter: the headband.

I’ve had a headband collection since I can remember – as a little girl, my dad used to toss my hair up into a whale spout (yes he does hair; ask him about it!) and slap a headband on it for some added pizzazz. These days, my headband collection is a little more preppy and a little less giant-flower-on-an-elastic-band. And while my dad has stopped doing my hair, I still use that little girl with a whale spout as inspiration now and then. Check out some of my favorite headband styling options from the endlessly preppy Blair Waldorf, as well as a few others, and shop my personal favorites below!
