Princess Primping: My Three Beauty MUST HAVE’S this month

Beauty products and primping are so heavily dependent upon personal preference – and there are so many products available in stores and online, it seems there’s something for everyone. Some women like patchouli and musk; I prefer lighter/cleaner scents that are either fruity, floral, or crisp. I tend to switch up my ‘signature scent’ with the seasons: it keeps things fun, and allows me to define my own personal style through perfumes ( I actually prefer Eau de toilettes, but you get the point). It’s a lot like the way I rotate the candles throughout our house – you won’t find me burning citrus scents in the winter, or pine/woodsy tones in the middle of August.

If I’m getting dressed and ready to go out in the morning, I never feel fully prepared to walk out the door until I’ve brushed my teeth (duh, thanks mom) and misted myself with my favorite scent. Makeup is very similar – and every woman has a different skin tone, color palette, and favorite makeup look (or many!). I personally have very golden/yellow hued skin, I blush a bright coral pink, and my eyes do best with neutral browns/pinks/golds, and a dark brown liner. When I was just starting to experiment with makeup in junior high school, my mom gave me a lecture about how makeup “is there to enhance what you already have going on”, and that’s stuck with me for the last decade or so. I was also in show choir in high school, so the whole clown-face for stage lighting was a real wakeup call for how I DID NOT want to look in the light of day. That said, sleep is a bit rare for me these days, so I need a team of beauty products that can really hold their own against late nights, long days at the office, and after work client meetings + social outings.

It can be tough to find exactly what you want in a foundation (lightweight, SPF, full coverage, anti shine, golden hues) or a blush (multi dimensional, shimmer, bright coral, powder only) or even a perfume (summery, warm, clean, muted tones, citrusy) – but I am COMPLETELY obsessed with all things from French cult beauty brand NARS cosmetics, and Tory Burch’s signature perfume.

Between the ‘All Day Luminous Foundation’ in ‘Fiji’ that I picked up last month at Sephora, and the ULTIMATE blush duo (Nars Dual Intensity Blush), I have found makeup nirvana. I don’t even think about it any more – I just wake up, and rub on a few dots of foundation, followed by a few blush brush strokes and some quick mascara. Voila – the perfect day look to get me through a full work day! Follow that with a spritz of ‘Tory Burch’ perfume, and I am ready to conquer the world. Primp: Blonde!!!

“Blondes have more fun” is true, my good friend T would argue. She and I have been going back and forth about highlights, sending pics from a salon chair with foils in, etc for the past few years. I’m one of those humans whose natural hair color swings somewhere between light brown and dark blonde, so to some extent, I can get away with trying either color. I tend to color seasonally – when things cool off in the fall, I opt for a dark mahogany brown, and as we move into spring, I like to lighten things up.

This weekend, I’m headed back toward blonde, and I have been looking for inspiration on the EXACT color I want everywhere. Check out some of our favorite blondes below, and the shades inspired by them:

Blondes, Blondes, Blondes

1. Blake Lively – babydoll blonde: Blake’s color is multifaceted and looks surf-y and natural – a true work of color genius. We’re guessing here, but it looks like more than 3 shades and countless foils to pull off that shade – kudos to her colorist!

2. Poppy Delevingne – balayage blonde: from Marie Claire, “Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint. It allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair color – similar to what nature gives us as children – with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines”. Poppy pulls off a modern blonde look with multiple shades that look as though they have been individually painted, dark roots that are shiny and provide contrast, and multi dimensional strands that reflect light.

3. Gwen Stefani – bottle blonde: the only person we’ve seen really rock the Platinum blonde look for more than a decade, Gwen’s bleached locks and light roots are always flawless, and her color is the brightest shade of white blonde.

4. Lilly Pulitzer model – caramel blonde: this darker shade of blonde is a perfect mixture of highlights and lowlights, keeping things looking organic and well balanced. The caramel blonde look is popular as a transition between brown and blonde, because highlights take a few applications (read: months) to really take over completely.

5. Reese Witherspoon – Hollywood blonde: Known for her perfectly coiffed light blonde hair, Reese keeps her roots clean and her color palette bright. Her hairstylist Cervando Maldonado has been coloring her hair for years, and holds the secret to that perfect color: light, bright, and minimal highlights.

Primp: Winter Beauty Must-Haves

Despite the abundant sunshine and warm temperatures the west coast has been experiencing for the past few days, most of the country is still firmly rooted in the final days of winter (see: #NYFW, and the slushy snow on pretty much every corner in NYC). For those of you who know me well, I’m a skincare fanatic, and I’m a big fan of mixing products from different brands into your beauty regimen to get what you need. When the weather is cold and dry, it can be tough to get psyched about your beauty routine – but fear not! Today, we’re sharing our 7 favorite winter beauty must-haves to keep yourself hydrated and radiant until spring blooms. Shop along with us below, and tell us about your favorites!

Detailed & Delighted // Primp: Winter Beauty Checklist

Here are our Top 7 Must-Haves:

1. Cartier Baiser Volé Perfumed body cream: this divine lily scented body butter will knock your socks off. The ultimate luxury you can wear all over – fashion girl #win.

2. Living Proof (yes, the Jen Anniston brand) Restore Hair Mask Treatment: a super hydrating blend that is sulfate, oil, and silicone free (and good for color). Guaranteed to reduce dry hair damage by 95% after a single use, this is a good weekly treatment to keep your locks shiny all year long!

3. Jo Malone ‘Wood Sage and Sea Salt’ cologne: reminiscent of the sea shore and fresh salted air, this light scent is a perfect transition between winter and spring. It reminds us of Nantucket!

4. Eos Sweet Mint Lip balm: tingly and sweet, the perfect moisturizing lip balm that gives your lips a little bit of shine on your way out the door.

5. Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Soymilk and Honey Body Polish: After my good girlfriend E gifted me a bottle of this for my birthday last month, I’ve been using it non-stop! It smells delightful, and is a great buffing polish that is gentle enough to use on your skin daily.

6. Oskia skin smoothing massage candle: while our favorite brand of soy massage candles – Illatos Lang–  comes to us all the way from Australia (and my gorgeous cousin Jade!), we also love this version by Oskia. Try both (our favorite is Illatos Lang’s ‘Pink Peony’), and enjoy a soft moisturizing wax that is perfect for your hands at night time, and a long burning scent that will fill the whole house.

7. Esteé Lauder’s ‘Get Started Now’ Anti-Aging kit: This kit includes their Revitalizing Anti-Aging Cream, Advanced night repair serum (I’ve been in love with this for years), their Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging Eye Balm, and the Perfectly Clean Multi-Action Foam Cleanser/Purifying Mask. A great skincare starter pack – rule #1 from Mom: never go to bed without washing your face!

Enjoy, beauties!
